First with the potentially dramatic: On June 17, I’m having a hysterectomy. Not cancer, but still necessary and I’ll be off work for 4 weeks. Some of that time, I will not be able to do much of anything besides watch TV. I’m going to order Netflix for while I’m off. So here’s my question:
What lesbian movies do you think I should watch while I’m off? Let’s not go for the obvious, such as Bound and Fried Green Tomatoes, or Desert Hearts, since I’ve seen those. What are some others I should see?
What other movies should I see? Have you seen anything good lately? What are your recommendations?
PS Femme Fairy GodMothers are always happy to have visitors or presents, so feel free to stop by or send goodies while I’m recovering!
The Femme Fairy Godmother is the alterego of a Michigan femme who loves to give (mostly unsolicited) advice to everyone regardless of sexual orientation. Also, the FFG has an overwhelming urge to mother everyone. And by mother I mean tell you how to live your life.

That’s all I can think of right now.

Have you seen D.E.B.S.? Also, you should definitely watch Born in Flames directed by Lizzie Borden. Set it Off is good too. Watermelon Woman and um…Flashdance (I’ve got a crush, you see). I also recently enjoyed Tarantino’s remake of Jackie Brown. Pam Grier kicks ass.

Viva la Vulva?
Or the classic, super fluffy Better Than Chocolate?
(I’m sort of embarassed to admit this is one of my faves)
I will also second Jack in suggesting DEBS…very fun movie!
You could also spend lots of time listening to Dan Savage’s SavageLove podcast archives

I’m horrible – I don’t watch a lot of lesbian movies. But I hope your recovery goes smoothly and peacefully!

Movies that I loved that had a gay or inclusive theme:
Antonia’s Line (in dutch)
The Station Agent
Transamerica
Aimee & Jaguar
The Closet (in french)
Fingersmith
Imagine Me & You (a light, feel good, bubble gum movie)
Notes and a Scandal
You can also browse Netflix movies under and Gay & Lesbian category.
Good luck with your surgery.

So sorry to hear about your upcoming surgery, FFG, but glad that you’re planning to take good care of yourself.Lesbian/Queer
But I’m a Cheerleader
Tipping the VelvetItty Bitty Titty Committee
Set It Off
I Shot Andy Warhol
I’m the One That I Want
The Notorious CHO
Gia (Angelina is great in this but FYI it’s a sad film)
I agree with Billi that 2 Girls in Love is adorable. I saw it a million times back in the day. BTW while I think Boys Dont Cry is an excellent film, I’d warn you that it’s not a feel good movie. For me, it’s like Monster–a very good film with great acting but hard to watch.
Other recommendations:
Little Miss Sunshine (it will brighten up your day
The Ladykillers (most people haven’t seen this Coen Brothers film but it’s very funny if you like their brand of humor)
She Done Him Wrong. (Treat yourself to some Mae West)
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (irresistible fluff)
Hairspray (John Waters’s original film, *not* the remake)
If you’re a fan of Alison Bechdel, her graphic novel Fun Home is worthy of all the acclaim it received and the Essential Dykes to Watch Out For is a great walk down memory lane.

Don’t know if I’m too late to recommend more movies, but I’d say anything from Christopher Guest: Spinal Tap, Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, and there are more. They’re always hilarious, in that dry, mockumentary kind of way.

I completely agree, G. I love those films–the gay men and lesbian couples in Best in Show should have their own movies. Of course my fave is Jennifer Coolidge as the glamourpuss femme!
